All-Time U.S. Gold Medal Count (Including 2024 Events)

As of July 28, 2024, the U.S. has accumulated a total of 1,070 gold medals across various Olympic sports. Here’s a snapshot of the breakdown by sport, including recent additions from the 2024 Games:

  • Olympic champion Jade Jones: Anxiety affected Tokyo performance

Double Olympic Taekwondo Champion Jade Jones Opens Up About Tokyo Setback and Plans for Paris 2024

Jade Jones, the renowned double Olympic taekwondo champion, has recently shared her struggles with anxiety during the pandemic and the challenges she faced at the Tokyo 2020 Games. The Welsh athlete, who had her sights set on securing an unprecedented third Olympic gold medal, experienced a setback when she was defeated in her opening match by Kimia Alizadeh of the Refugee Olympic Team.

In an interview with BBC Sport Wales, Jones reflected on the profound impact the COVID-19 lockdown had on her mental health. “I didn’t realize how much lockdown affected me,” she admitted. The enforced isolation and uncertainty of the pandemic led to a significant increase in her anxiety levels, an emotional struggle she had never encountered before.

Jones described her anxiety as overwhelming. “I was petrified to go near my family, fearing that I might unknowingly pass on the virus,” she explained. This fear was compounded by her tendency to overthink situations, creating a cycle of stress that proved difficult to escape. The lockdown not only placed a strain on her mental well-being but also intensified the pressure she placed on herself to perform well at the Olympics.

The Tokyo Games, held in a largely empty stadium due to COVID-19 restrictions, presented a unique set of challenges for Jones. “It didn’t even feel like an Olympics,” she said. The absence of the usual support from her family and fans, who would typically offer encouragement and motivation, contributed to her struggle to mentally engage with the competition. In taekwondo, where every second counts and one mistake can end a match, this mental disconnect proved costly.

Despite the heartache of the Tokyo Games, Jones remains hopeful and determined about her future in the sport. She is setting her sights on the Paris 2024 Olympics, where she aims to add a third gold medal to her collection. Her optimism is reflected in her recent success; Jones made a triumphant return to competition by winning gold at the President’s Cup in February, her first tournament since Tokyo.

Jayson Tatum to see floor in 2nd Olympic game vs. South Sudan

Tatum Benched: A Surprising Omission in Team USA's Victory

Team USA's dominant 110-84 win over Serbia in their Olympic opener was a showcase of collective talent. However, the absence of star forward Jayson Tatum from the court sparked immediate conversation and scrutiny. Coach Steve Kerr's decision to sideline the first-team All-NBA player was a bold move that required explanation.

Kerr addressed the situation candidly, revealing a pre-game meeting with Tatum to discuss the reasoning behind the benching. The coach emphasized that the decision was based on strategic considerations, aligning player strengths with the specific challenges posed by Serbia. The Serbian team, with its formidable frontcourt led by Nikola Jokic, prompted Kerr to opt for a three-center rotation featuring Joel Embiid, Anthony Davis, and Bam Adebayo. Additionally, Serbia's guard play necessitated the inclusion of Derrick White, whose defensive prowess and impact off the bench proved crucial.

The unique dynamics of FIBA basketball, with longer games and different rules compared to the NBA, influenced Kerr's lineup choices. The absence of a defensive three-second rule and relaxed goaltending rules favored larger players.

Kerr was transparent about the difficulty of managing such a talented roster. He acknowledged the absurdity of sitting world-class players but stressed the importance of focusing on winning each game individually. He drew on his past experiences with the national team, highlighting instances where unforeseen circumstances forced adjustments to the roster.

The upcoming match against South Sudan presents a different challenge. The African team's athleticism and reliance on three-point shooting demand a different approach. Tatum's ability to defend multiple positions becomes invaluable in this context. The coach confirmed Tatum's inclusion in the starting lineup for the South Sudan game, emphasizing the need for everyone to be ready to contribute.

Tatum's limited playing time in the exhibition games and his performance against South Sudan in a previous matchup added context to the situation. While the decision to bench him raised eyebrows, Kerr's strategic thinking and the evolving nature of the tournament suggest that Tatum's role will expand as the competition progresses.

As Team USA navigates the Olympic tournament, the management of its star-studded roster will continue to be a focal point. Kerr's ability to balance individual talent with team dynamics will be crucial in determining the team's ultimate success.

COVID-19 Surge Exposes Health Inequities in the USA

A new wave of COVID-19 infections is gripping the United States, highlighting persistent disparities in healthcare access and preventative measures.

Despite rising case numbers, hospitalizations, and deaths, public health measures like mask-wearing have declined significantly. This resurgence is being fueled by highly contagious variants and exacerbated by heatwaves driving people indoors.

While the overall vaccination rate is low, the situation is particularly dire for marginalized communities. People of color are disproportionately affected by lower vaccination and antiviral treatment rates, reflecting longstanding health inequities. Older adults, especially those in nursing homes, remain vulnerable due to low vaccination rates and a decline in pandemic preparedness.

Experts warn that the lack of equitable access to vaccines, boosters, and antivirals like Paxlovid is contributing to the severity of the outbreak. As the nation faces another COVID-19 surge, addressing these health disparities is crucial for mitigating the impact and protecting vulnerable populations.

MLB Trade Deadline: A Quiet Market

MLB Trade Deadline: A Quiet Market

The 2024 MLB trade deadline is approaching, but big-name deals are scarce. Unlike previous years filled with blockbuster trades, this year's market has been relatively quiet.

    Key Points:

    • Limited Top Talent: There are fewer top-tier players available compared to past deadlines.
    • High Asking Prices: Teams are demanding significant returns for their star players, deterring potential buyers.
    • Uncertainty Surrounding Key Players: Some high-profile players, like Garrett Crochet, have uncertain futures due to contract demands.
    • Teams Holding Onto Players: Even strong contenders are hesitant to part with key players, hoping to strengthen their playoff chances.

    Notable Players and Teams:

    • Garrett Crochet (Chicago White Sox): This rising star pitcher wants a contract extension before being traded, complicating potential deals.
    • Luis Robert Jr. (Chicago White Sox): The White Sox have high demands for their talented center fielder.
    • Tampa Bay Rays: Known for trading valuable players, they might move players like Isaac Paredes and Zach Eflin.
    • Detroit Tigers: Tarik Skubal is highly sought after, but the Tigers are reluctant to trade him.
    • Los Angeles Angels: Tyler Anderson and Luis Rengifo could be trade targets for teams seeking pitching and infield help.

    Overall Outlook:

While there's still time for unexpected moves, the 2024 trade deadline is shaping up to be less exciting than previous years. Teams are playing it cautious, waiting for the right opportunities to emerge.

Would you like to know more about a specific team or player?

The Evolving Landscape of the MLB Trade Deadline

While the 2024 MLB trade deadline is shaping up to be quieter than previous years, the situation is fluid and can change rapidly. Several factors are influencing the market:

    Potential Game-Changers:

    • Injury Updates: A significant injury to a star player could dramatically alter the trade landscape. Teams might become sellers if their playoff hopes diminish, increasing the available talent pool.
    • Wild Card Races: As the playoff picture becomes clearer, teams on the bubble might become more aggressive buyers or sellers.
    • Last-Minute Deals: The final days before the deadline often see a flurry of activity as teams make desperate moves to improve their rosters.

    Teams to Watch:

  • Contenders: Teams like the Orioles, Braves, and Dodgers are always in the mix for upgrades. They might be willing to pay a premium for impact players.
  • Buyers: Clubs on the cusp of the playoffs, such as the Mariners, Blue Jays, and Rays, could be active in acquiring pieces to bolster their chances.
  • Sellers: Teams out of contention, like the Nationals, Reds, and Rockies, might be motivated to trade away valuable assets for prospects.

    Potential Impact Players:

While the top-tier talent might be limited, several players could still be traded:

    • Relief Pitchers: With closers and setup men in high demand, players like Tanner Scott (Marlins), Jason Adam (Rays), and David Robertson (Phillies) could draw interest.
    • Starting Pitchers: If teams become desperate, mid-tier starters like Cal Quantrill (Guardians) or Tyler Anderson (Angels) could become attractive options.
    • Utility Players: Versatile players like Luis Rengifo (Angels) and Brandon Lowe (Rays) can provide value to contending teams.

It's important to stay updated on the latest news and rumors as the trade deadline approaches. Unexpected deals can happen, and the market could heat up quickly.

Kriya Yoga And The Nature Of The Journey

Kriya yoga has found a place in some people who are looking for a deeper, more spiritual relationship with their lives. It is a kundalini-oriented yoga and meditation technique, that also teaches certain spiritual and esoteric principles. Unfortunately, like many similar “spiritual” power structures, it teaches you that essentially your power lies outside of yourself – that is, that you need a ‘guru’, or ‘master’ to access your own innate spirituality. Kriya yoga has some aims which sound both appealing and promising. They aim to eliminate “obstructions” and “obstacles” from the mind and body. Point of view is a very interesting thing here, however. Because what is an obstacle or obstruction to one person, may not be to another. This assumes a very interesting light in reference to power structures and belief systems and highlights why it is important to maintain your own self-sovereignty in mind and action. Kriya yoga was brought to the West by Yogananda in the 1920s. He established the Self-Realization Fellowship as a ‘total yoga’ system that tried to address spiritual as well as physical aspects of self. Kriya yoga is derived mainly from three other yoga techniques – karma yoga, bhakti yoga, and Jnana yoga. Karma yoga focuses on the movement of the soul both inside and outside of the mind. Jnana yoga focuses on wisdom, allowing the mind freedom. Bhakti yoga focuses on love, as it allows you to come to terms with everything around you. The aim in combining them was to “purify” the mind and soul, and proponents of kriya yoga believe they can achieve self-realization more quickly this way than following the other disciplines. Kriya Preparation The first step in Kriya is to ‘prepare’ your body, and that is done in one of a couple of ways. For many, Hatha yoga is the perfect preparation exercise. For others, though, who may not be as flexible, alternatives are provided. Next in Kriya, the mind is prepared. General conduct is studied as part of the mental process in this discipline, so ensuring your mind is correctly focused is essential. Additionally, the Kriya yoga technique pushes you to study overall wellness, cleanliness, purity, and even metaphysical principles. Together, though, they help to ‘prepare’ the mind for later techniques, which use the body’s life force currents ostensibly to “refine” the brain and nervous system. Mantras are taught in kriya yoga techniques. They are believed to deepen the meditative experience. This sound technology undoubtedly tunes the body, like a tuning fork, as will any sound that is repeated and focused on. The question is, of course, to what frequency is the body being tuned? If self-realization is a journey, whose journey are we undertaking? Ours, or someone else’s? Kriya yoga undoubtedly resonates with some people. For myself, I prefer more transparency.

Seven Tips for a long and healthy life.

Even so, modern medical technology does not save you from the problems of an unhealthy lifestyle. Instead of getting the modern medical solution to every problem, it is better to stay in such a way that you do not get sick.

The rate of prevention is certainly better than a kilogram of remedy. Here are seven tips for how to live a long and healthy life. In addition, the same lifestyle that helps you to avoid illness will also help you to lose weight.

    1. Get enough exercise

In the past, people had to use their bodies to do their normal work. But today a person can get up, go to work in a car, and sit down, get up and go home by car and when you get home, sit down again all day. In such a life there is no manual labor. This dysfunction is one of the main causes of many diseases. Sports, running. travel and other things should be added to our lives if our normal work does not require us to be physically active. Mina

    2. Sleep when you feel full

This may sound easy, but many people stay up late even with their bodies telling them it's time to go to bed. Yoga and Ayurvedic doctors also recommend sleeping at night and working during the day. However, people like students will take coffee and stimulants to study until late at night. Others develop a habit of staying active at night and sleeping during the day. When we are able to do this, it ultimately takes an impact on life. Some health experts say that this unnatural lifestyle is one of the major causes of cancer and other diseases

    3. Eat when you feel hungry

This is also a simple idea, but we also often contradict physical messages. If you are eating out of habit or because of social pressure at some point in the day, even if you do not have a real appetite, then you will not digest your food properly. Acid and indigestion start, and this contributes to the chances of some of the more complex diseases in the roots. Anorexia is a sign of good health, but if you do not have an appetite you should wait a bit and then eat. (If you do not have food even after waiting a short time, you should see a doctor because something is wrong.)

    4. Fast on a regular, systematic basis

If you ask anyone to work 365 days a year without rest, they can complain that they have to rest or they will go down. But we never bothered to ask or think about our digestive organs that force us to work every day without rest. They can't protest the way one can do to their boss, but they give us signs that they can't work indefinitely. When we ignore those signs and force them to degenerate, those organs degenerate. That is why regular fasting is necessary. Avoid eating for one full day. This provides relaxation to your digestive organs and also helps eliminate waste from your body. Regular fasting allows one to devote more time to mental or spiritual activities. Fasting is not a reed in a cave, but a rational practice that can be practiced by anyone.

    5. Wash with cool water before bed

As mentioned above, proper sleep is essential for maintaining good health. If you wash your vital vehicles and nerves (hands, arms, eyes, legs, mouth, genitals) before going to bed using cool water, this will relax and prepare you for deep sleep.

    6. Do regular meditation

Your body is connected to your mind. Many diseases of this period are psychosomatic. Depression and anxiety are detrimental to our physical health. Meditation is a mental exercise that involves, among other things, letting you get out of life's problems. Learn the simple process and do it regularly.

    7. Get up every morning

It also echoes the old adage, “Sleep is early, waking up early makes a person live, rich and intelligent.” I don't know if it will make you rich, but it will definitely make you healthier. Your body needs adequate sleep, not too much and not too little.

Follow these tips and you can't go wrong.
